Your application must include proof of your language skills in the teaching language(s) of the relevant partner universities. You can provide proof of language skills either through a recognised language certificate (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, DELE, DELF/DALF, UNIcert®) or through a DAAD language certificate. Other certificates or confirmations (e.g. Abitur / A-Level certificates) will not be accepted for the application. The DAAD language certificate must not be older than 2 years at the time of application. For the validity of the other certificates, please refer to the certificates themselves.
For the purpose of your initial application, a DAAD language certificate (or comparable) will suffice. The partner university may request a further internationally-recognised language certificate from those applicants who have been accepted and nominated for an exchange semester. Further information on the requirements of the individual partner universities can be found on their websites.
DAAD Language Certificate:
The Centre for Language Studies (ZFS) will advise you on the various options for achieving a DAAD language certificate. Please be aware of the individual regulations for each course of study and allow sufficient time.
Students who are unable to provide a complete DAAD language certificate by the application deadline due to inconvenient scheduling of the language exams, should upload the results of the level assessment (computer-based section). The DAAD language certificate must be submitted by the selection interview at the latest.
Language certificate and language level:
Information about the course languages and the language level required by the host university can be found in our database (click on the information icon on the left to view information on each partner university).
Proof of language skills must be submitted for at least one of the tuition languages at the partner university. Example 1: University X: courses are taught in English and Spanish; University Y: courses are taught in English and French -> it is sufficient to show proof of English language skills. Example 2: University A: courses are taught in English and Spanish; University B: courses are taught in French -> proof of language skills for English or Spanish and for French are required.
Exceptions - When is it not necessary to submit proof of language skills?
- Native speakers:
If courses are taught in your native language, you do not need to submit a language certificate.
- Romance Studies:
Students studying Romance Studies are a special case: No additional language certificate is required for the internal application at Paderborn University. It is sufficient to submit your transcript of records or grade list (including the linguistic modules).
- English and American Studies:
The following applies to students of English or American Studies: If it is evident from your transcript of records that you have successfully completed the course CLC Intermediate or passed CLC Elementary with an overall mark of 2.7 or better, it is not necessary to submit an additional language certificate for the internal application at Paderborn University. If this requirement is not fulfilled according to your transcript of records, you must submit a DAAD (or comparable) language certificate.
- Exception for application round I:
IBS students who cannot yet submit the DAAD language certificate because the exam is not scheduled until the end of the semester, may submit their language certificate at a later date. Please upload a brief explanation in place of the language certificate.
