The letter of motivation should be no more than 2 pages. If you are applying to more than one university in any given application round, you should include a general section explaining your motivation for spending a semester abroad. Please describe the focus areas of your studies so far and your plans for continuing your studies abroad. You should also state your reasons for applying to the selected universities in the order of priority.

If for any reason you are unable to print your transcript of records directly from PAUL, you can request a certificate of your previous exam results and a confirmation of your current exam registrations from the Central Examination Office.  In many courses of study you can request this certificate by email from the Central Examination Office. It will then be made available to you to download from PAUL. The document is valid without a signature.

For the internal application process at Paderborn University it is not necessary to submit your transcript of records in the language of teaching.

Important for Master degree students, that have already finished their BA at date of application: Please also include the transcript of records for your bachelor’s degree in your application documents.

+++ The following regulations apply to the UPB-internal application process. The partner universities may require a different language certificate for their own registration process before the start of the semester abroad. Information on this can be found on the partner websites. Please take care of this in good time! +++

You can provide proof of your language skills either through a recognised language certificate (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, DELE, DELF/DALF, UNIcert®) or through the DAAD language certificate. Other forms of certificates or attestations (e.g. the Abitur certificate) are not accepted for the application. The DAAD language certificate must not be older than 2 years at the time of application. Please refer to the certificates themselves for the validity of the other certificates.

DAAD Language Certificate:

Please inform yourself at the Centre for Language Studies (ZfS) about the different ways to obtain a DAAD language certificate. Students who are unable to submit a complete DAAD language certificate by the application deadline due to scheduling reasons, please upload the results of the pre-assessment (computer-based part) for the DAAD language certificate. The DAAD language certificate must then be available for the selection interview at the latest. Submit it to the respective Departmental Coordinator in the faculty. The International Office will not accept any more application documents after the deadline.

Language of instruction and language level:

Information on the possible languages of instruction and the language level required by the respective partner university can be found in our partner university portal (detailed view of the individual bilateral agreements). If you select different languages of instruction for different mobility requests in the online application, language certificates must be submitted for all languages.

Exceptions for the UPB internal application process - When no language certificate needs to be submitted:

We strongly recommend that you still obtain an official language certificate, as this is required in most cases during the registration process at the partner universities.

  1. Native speakers:
If the language of instruction is your native language, no language certificate needs to be submitted.
  2. Romance Languages students:
There is a special regulation for students of Romance Laguanges: You do not have to submit a language certificate for the internal application process at the University of Paderborn, a transcript (incl. the language practical modules) is sufficient.
  3. English and American Studies students:
For students of English and American Studies the following regulation applies: If it is evident in your transcript that the course CLC Intermediate was successfully completed, you do not have to submit a language certificate for the internal application at Paderborn University.  If the language proficiency cannot be provided under the above-mentioned conditions via the transcript, a DAAD language certificate (or comparable language proficiency certificate) must be submitted.
  4. IBS students:
IBS students who cannot yet submit the DAAD language certificate because the required exam will not be written until the end of this semester can submit their language certificate later. Please upload a short statement at the appropriate place.
