Research Data and Research Data Management at Paderborn University

At Paderborn University, we attach great importance to research data as the basis of scientific knowledge. The information on these web pages supplements our guideline on handling research data and provides practical advice on its implementation. Research data are all data that are created during a research process. In addition to texts, graphics, audio files, video files and databases, research data can also include algorithms and software for processing, evaluating or presenting research results. Research data accrue at different moments of the research process.

1.

Planning phase

Research data management plans are developed prior to the research project. These should help to clarify fundamental questions and responsibilities even before the research project starts. It is also important to consider the legal framework conditions.

2.

Implementation phase

During the ongoing research project, the storage of research data must be taken into account. PC2 and IMT provide central storage space incl. data backup for the temporary storage of research data for all members of the University conducting research.

3.

Closing phase

After the research project, the research data must be secured, e.g. by storing the data in suitable data archives or repositories (e.g. the free online storage service Zenodo). Directories for research data repositories can help in choosing a suitable repository, e.g. the DFG portal for research infrastructures "RIsources". To ensure that data can be found, it is advisable to use a persistent identifier(PID), e.g. in the form of a digital object identifier(DOI), when publishing the data.

Research Data Management Plan

Research data management (RDM) refers to all activities carried out to ensure the long-term usability of research data. Find out when an RDM plan is needed and what you need to pay attention to when creating it.
