120 STEM-interested middle and high school students immersed themselves in different STEM fields of study at the University of Paderborn during the second week of the fall holidays from October 9 to 13. The "Herbst-Uni 2023", which was organized and carried out by the project "Frauen gestalten die Informationsgesellschaft" in cooperation with "MINT@UniPB", took place this time again in presence on the campus of the university. Some selected events were also offered digitally at the same time.

"Herbst Uni" presents future-oriented topics

The STEM enthusiasts gained insights into future-oriented topics, such as climate protection, environmental protection and digitization. In the "girls only" workshop, participants built and programmed a weather station. In addition, in the business informatics workshop, the schoolgirls were able to explore digital innovations for a "greener" future. In the area of e-technology, "Herbst Uni" also offered an English-language event on the topic of "Processing of Semiconductors" for the first time. In the "girls only" excursion, participants also had the opportunity to look behind the scenes at Paderborn-based companies dSPACE and Benteler and experience the practical day-to-day work of a female STEM graduate.

The students of the "all gender" format were able to learn about artificial intelligence (AI) and the world's smallest radar in the electrical engineering events. In physics, the conditions and methods of astrophysics in the search for alien planets were discussed, while the chemistry department showed how to use infrared microscopy to distinguish plastics. A workshop for students with an interest in industrial engineering also provided initial insights into the use of virtual reality in the product development process.

STEM students report on their daily study routine

In addition to the technical content, the students were also given information about studying. At "meetMINT", various STEM study programs at the University of Paderborn presented themselves. Furthermore, female STEM students reported on their everyday study life and gave the students helpful tips. Next year, those interested in STEM will be able to deepen the experience gained: The "Frühlings-Uni" 2024 will take place during the first week of the Easter break from March 25 to 28.
