From Monday to Friday, September 11 to 15, 2023, the third "Summer School Higher Education Research" (HoBid 3) will take place at Paderborn University. Numerous lectures and workshops will revolve around the topic of science communication. The aim of the event is to provide a platform for project work, continuing education and networking for young researchers who are concerned with teaching and learning at universities.
HoBid is organized by Prof. Dr. Carla Bohndick (University of Hamburg, Hamburg Center for University Teaching and Learning), Prof. Dr. Tobias Jenert (Paderborn University, Faculty of Economics) and Prof. Dr. Ingrid Scharlau (also Paderborn University, Psychology, Faculty of Cultural Studies). The Summer School is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation.
Research around teaching and learning
Many disciplines deal with teaching and learning at universities, which are different in terms of content and methodology. The HoBid Summer School offers PhD students working in this field the opportunity to discuss their research from the perspective of science communication. Central elements are daily meetings and writing labs, plenary sessions with talks by renowned scientists from different fields, methodological workshops and much more.
While the keynotes will examine the topic of science communication from different perspectives, workshops will present methods for analyzing and dealing with science communication in research, for example in a podcast workshop. In addition, participants will be able to reflect on communication issues in their dissertation projects. Topics include the use of social media or the willingness to negotiate one's own discipline and thus one's own perspective with other people.
Invitation to university public lectures
As part of the Summer School "Approaches to Research on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education", two keynotes open to the public will take place, to which all interested parties are cordially invited. Psychologist Dorothe Kienhues will speak on "Preserving the epistemic authority of science - but in a humble way" on September 12 from 9 to 10:30 a.m., while physicist and information scientist Teresa Velden will speak on "Epistemic Diversity meets Open Science: The Field-Specificity of Data Sharing" on September 13, also from 9 to 10.30 a.m. Both talks are scheduled to take place in the lecture hall in Q0.
