As our University becomes more international, the need for reliable, high-quality multilingual communication continues to grow. To help us meet this growing need even more effectively, and in line with the recently published Recommendations for Action Regarding the Use of Language and Multilingualism at Paderborn University, a new translation tool is now available in the University’s internal AI chat environment. It draws on the University’s established glossary and thus supports precise, consistent translations of key content and already established internal University terminology from German into English.
The LLM-based tool is available in two versions: The GWDG model prioritises data protection, while the OpenAI model places greater emphasis on stylistic quality. This allows you to work efficiently and in compliance with regulations, depending on your specific requirements, for example, when dealing with less sensitive content. Detailed information on how both models work and how to use them can also be found on the corresponding information page of the ZIM. Our aim is to further improve the quality of machine translation at our University. This will enable the University’s translators to dedicate more time to highly demanding, legally significant, and strategically important documents, as well as to rigorous quality assurance.
The models are currently available for you to use. You are welcome to explore them actively and, where appropriate, to integrate them into your day-to-day work. This project is currently in a test phase, and both the glossary and the models are continuously being expanded and improved.
