"Vitreous body flakes. About things we don't see": exhibition on the topic of everyday racism

Ort: University Library

From 30 April to 12 May, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Paderborn University, in cooperation with the ADA Service Centre for Anti-Discrimination Work of the Caritas Association Paderborn e.V., is presenting the exhibition "Vitreous Flakes. About things we don't see". As part of the International Weeks against Racism, the works focus on experiences of everyday racism. Eleven artists have translated the experiences of those affected into pictures. Anyone interested is invited to visit the exhibition free of charge during the library's opening hours (Monday to Friday: 7.30 a.m. to midnight, Saturday to Sunday: 9 a.m. to 8.30 p.m.; closed on public holidays).

"Vitreous flakes are the dark spots when looking at the sun that cannot be focussed and remain at the edge of the field of vision. The situation is similar for those not affected by everyday racism. This takes place before our eyes, but not in the centre of our attention, but on the periphery. This means that it is often imperceptible to the untrained eye, but everyday life for those affected," says Matthias Zimoch from the ADA Anti-Discrimination Service Centre. Zimoch initiated the exhibition together with Dr Larissa Eikermann, Vice Dean for Sustainability, Equality and Diversity at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. It is funded by the Partnership for Democracy in the Paderborn District Democracy Office. These eleven artists are presenting their works: Maria Aras, Tomás Altamirano, Wolfgang Brenner, Claudia Cremer-R, Julia Hachenberg, Volker Heisener, Michel Ptasinsk, Josefine Reiermann, Mela, Dagmar Venus and Jan Vollmer.
