Visa-application and first steps

Acceptance letter for visa application

For international students, Paderborn University issues an acceptance letter for the application of the visa. According to § 16b AufenthG (Act of Residence) the visa applicant needs to proof the acceptance of an educational institution and not the enrolment! Please refrain from enroling without visa, because this will lead to many follow up problems, especially if the visa is rejected or the applicant has to cancel his plan to study at Paderborn University for another reason.

Paderborn University wants to provide you with the best possible support right from the start and we therefore work together with strong partners.

Please also note the following information:

  • Especially if you come from a country outside the EU, you should start planning your study abroad programme 12-18 months before you plan to start your studies.
  • If you need a study visa, you should apply for it as early as possible. It is possible to apply before you receive your university admission letter. The letter of admission usually only has to be presented at the visa appointment.
  • Paderborn University has no influence on the visa procedure for students. Please refrain from making such enquiries!
