18th "International Conference on Business Informatics" at Paderborn University with innovative impulses

Setting the course together for a responsible digital future: The progressive spread of digital technologies has improved our private and professional lives in many ways. However, the great impact of these technologies also brings with it great responsibility. At the 18th "International Conference on Business Informatics" (WI) in September, numerous experts from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, among others, came to Paderborn to discuss how we can responsibly shape the digital transformation. The event was organised by the Department of Information Systems at Paderborn University.

In his video message, conference patron Dr. Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport, emphasised that responsible action helps us to trust, accept and use digital technologies. Prof. Dr. Birgitt Riegraf, President of Paderborn University, emphasised: "Our aspiration is to constructively shape and critically accompany the digital transformation. Paderborn has a long tradition in the field of information technology. Not only Heinz Nixdorf, but also numerous software and technology companies are at home here. I am therefore very pleased that Paderborn University is hosting the most important specialist conference for business informatics this year."

Digital technologies – digital responsibility

For four days, a total of 556 participants exchanged views on the state of current research in Paderborn's Future Mile 2 and in the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum (HNF). In a panel discussion, experts from industry and science spoke about the growing importance of fairness, ethics and humanity in our digital world. Prof. Dr. Michael Rosemann, Director of the QUT Centre for Future Enterprise in Australia, addressed "Learning from the Future" in his keynote speech. He pleaded for developing a common understanding of possible future scenarios in order to better address current challenges. In addition, IT leaders from international companies and organisations discussed the role of IT leaders. Among other things, they addressed the fact that digital responsibility starts where the legal framework is not yet defined - because technological development is usually one step ahead of regulation.

Digitalisation "made in Paderborn"

For the first time, the WI also included a student challenge in which schools from Paderborn and the surrounding area presented their digital ideas for a sustainable future. The "Geteilte Mensa" team from Pelizaeus Gymnasium and Reismann Gymnasium presented a virtual fridge as an intelligent solution to reduce food waste. The idea: an app reminds of approaching expiry dates of food, gives tips for storage and suggests recipes based on available ingredients. The students were awarded first place and prize money of 600 euros, sponsored by Sparkasse Paderborn-Höxter-Detmold.

About the WI

The WI is the most important conference for business informatics research in the German-speaking world. It offers academics, entrepreneurs and young professionals the opportunity to find out about and discuss the current state of research. The conference is supported by the association "Die Wirtschaftsinformatik e.V.", the Scientific Commission for Business Informatics in the Association of University Teachers of Business Administration (VHB), the AIS Chapter Germany (AISD) and the Department of Business Informatics of the German Informatics Society. The significant success of the conference is also due to the support of this year's sponsors and network partners. DATEV and SICP - Software Innovation Campus Paderborn were involved as gold sponsors. Also supporting the conference were the companies Weidmüller, Finanz Informatik, 29Forward, UNITY and Arvato as well as the Stiftung Westfalen as silver sponsors. In addition, the companies Springer, Springer Gabler and myConsult supported this year's conference as bronze sponsors. WI23 was also able to gain strong network partners in the form of the InnoZent OWL technology network, Arena2036, OstWestfalenLippe GmbH, IHK Ostwestfalen zu Bielefeld, Paderborn Economic Development and the Paderborn district.
