New faces at Paderborn University: the 2023/24 winter semester has begun, and with it various people are starting their first semester of study. On Wednesday 4 October, the University welcomed 2,605 new students (preliminary numbers) to their campus to begin a new stage of their lives. University President Professor Birgitt Riegraf highlights the importance of this milestone in the life of these new students: ‘Coming to study at Paderborn University was the right choice. Studies are not just a time to gain knowledge and further develop your personal skills – they are also an opportunity to make lifelong friends.’

As in previous years, many of the new students have opted for a teacher training course in Paderborn. During the orientation phase, they have an opportunity to explore the campus, meet their fellow students and talk to their tutors.

Embarking on an academic adventure

Studying is a time to learn, grow and explore. The new arrivals learned about what the University and city of Paderborn have to offer at a discussion session in a packed-out auditorium. Other new students were also watching via video in lecture hall G. Riegraf emphasised the short communication channels at this young, dynamic university, which has a particularly strong research orientation whilst also offering numerous direct contacts. Professor Volker Schöppner, Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Quality Management, encouraged the students to get actively involved and take advantage of the many opportunities the University has to offer, whether the University Orchestra, University Drama Group or University Sports. Sabine Kramm, deputy mayor of the city of Paderborn, was also delighted to personally welcome the new students, and touched upon the close collaborations between the University and the city.

The new students heard from new General Students Committee chair Julian Rische about the many opportunities to explore their own interests and passions, not just in lecture halls but also via countless student groups and initiatives. Lena Wobbe, University Sports staff member, also invited students to visit the new padel court or recharge station during their lunch break as a change of pace from lectures and seminars.

Exciting insights into the world of physics, plus live music

The semester was launched by a spectacular show from the Event Physics team, presenting experiments that students could join in with themselves. The new students learned the secrets behind various physical phenomena in an entertaining way. For example, the team demonstrated how a theremin can be used to make contactless music, and how two Tesla coils create lightning and tunes.

Zara Akopyan, who studied at Paderborn University and is a recent bachelor’s graduate, was greeted with much applause for her singing performance.

The event was hosted by Julia Ures and Christopher Müller.
