Kristianstad University (HKR) – Experience Sweden, study with a practical focus and an international outlook
Kristianstad University (HKR) has a long tradition of higher education dating back to the 19th century. What began as institutions specialising in teacher training and nursing education has developed into a modern university offering a diverse range of courses on offer with a strong international focus.
Today, the university combines academic excellence with a practical focus and places great emphasis on international collaboration, innovation and social responsibility. Through close links with businesses, public institutions and organisations, students are optimally prepared for the demands of the international labour market.
A university that’s right for you
Kristianstad University is distinguished by its particular focus on practice-integrated learning. It is the only university in Sweden to offer work-integrated learning formats across all its bachelor’s degree programmes, combining academic knowledge with practical experience.
A key feature is the Imagine programme, which is integrated into many study programmes and helps students develop problem-solving skills, teamwork and the ability to innovate. In collaboration with businesses and organisations, students gain valuable practical experience whilst still studying.
The university has also been recognised for its outstanding study environment: in 2024, Kristianstad was awarded the ‘Student City of the Year’ title by the Swedish Student Union (SFS).
Life on campus
Kristianstad University has a central campus on which all faculties and support services are located. This ensures short distances and close interaction between students and teaching staff.
The university offers:
- Modern libraries and study areas
- Sports and leisure facilities
- Student societies and social activities
- Induction days for international students
- Personalised advice and support services
- Guaranteed accommodation for international students
Many international students live in furnished halls of residence with internet access and benefit from a comprehensive range of support services during their stay.
Kristianstad – Studying in southern Sweden
Kristianstad is situated in the southern Swedish region of Skåne and offers a high quality of life, a natural setting and an open, international atmosphere. The city combines historic charm with modern student life and offers numerous opportunities for outdoor leisure activities.
Thanks to good transport links, Malmö, Lund and Copenhagen are easily accessible. At the same time, students benefit from a quieter and more personal atmosphere than in Scandinavia’s major cities.
COLOURS at the HKR
As a member of the COLOURS Alliance, Kristianstad University is actively committed to international collaboration, innovative teaching methods and social responsibility. Students can take part in international workshops, CoLabs and challenge-based learning projects, and work on real-world challenges alongside students from other European universities.
The strong links between the university, industry and society make HKR a key partner within the COLOURS Alliance.
Workshops & CoLabs
Kristianstad University takes part in the COLOURS CoLabs on sustainability, innovation, education and social development. Working in international teams, students jointly develop solutions to current challenges and gain valuable intercultural experience.
Language courses & learning Swedish
Don’t speak Swedish yet? No problem. Many courses are on offer in English. In addition, international students have the opportunity to attend Swedish language courses and get to know the country’s language and culture.
