Prof. Dr Caren Sureth-Sloane, an economist at Paderborn University, has been appointed as one of a total of 22 researchers to the international scientific advisory board of ‘Open Research Europe’, or ORE for short. This is a renowned open-access publishing platform for academics, which, from this autumn, will be available to all researchers at German institutions for the free publication of their publications. The independent committee helps to safeguard the integrity of ORE and to guide the strategic development of the platform. Members are appointed for an initial term of three years.
From this year onwards, ORE will be supported by a consortium of research and funding organisations from eleven European countries. Until now, the publication platform has only been open to beneficiaries of the EU research framework programmes. With the expansion of the funding consortium, it will be possible for all researchers working at German research organisations to use the platform free of charge, regardless of whether they receive project funding. The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) is Germany’s contractual partner within the consortium; the German Research Foundation (DFG), in its capacity as a self-governing body for research, is responsible for implementation at national level and for participation in the ORE Funders’ Group and the Executive Committee.
Candidates for the Advisory Board were assessed on the basis of their scientific excellence and reputation, their experience in research evaluation, and their commitment to open science. “I am delighted to have been appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of Open Science Europe and feel honoured to be able to champion open, transparent science there. My own research profile is guided by the principle of transparency – a principle that is also indispensable for safeguarding scientific integrity in the publication process. I look forward to actively contributing my experience in research funding and evaluation to the strategic development of ORE,” said Prof. Sureth-Sloane.
The economics expert is a professor of business administration, specialising in business taxation, at Paderborn University, as well as a (part-time) professor at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. Her research examines how taxes, tax complexity and regulatory uncertainty influence business decisions and compliance with tax regulations. She is the spokesperson for the DFG Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio 266‘Accounting for Transparency’and Vice-President of the German Research Foundation (DFG), Vice-President of the Schmalenbach Society for Business Administration, and a member of the steering committee of the Network for Empirical Tax Research (NeSt) at the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF).
The future tasks of the newly formed advisory board include providing advice on academic issues relating to ORE’s publication services and their guidelines, as well as on ethical guidelines and the peer-review process. In addition, the board will advise on strategic aspects of the platform, including its future direction, sustainability and potential collaborations. The board’s remit also includes the examination of cases of research misconduct and issues relating to transparency.
