Award for outstanding achievement in STEM subjects

Paderborn University has awarded the Business Sponsorship Award for the 19th time. The prize honours young people for their achievements in the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and recognises their exceptional commitment and outstanding results, particularly in mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics. It is funded by regional businesses and awarded in cooperation with Paderborn University. Along with prize money of 75 euros, the 276 award-winning pupils in Years 8 and 9 from grammar schools and comprehensive schools in the districts of Paderborn and Höxter received a certificate. In addition, representatives from the sponsoring organisations and the City of Paderborn presented vouchers for the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum. Robert Siemensmeyer, First Deputy Mayor of the City of Paderborn, and Annette Mühlenhoff, head of section at the Paderborn District Administration, also congratulated the prize-winners. The ‘Event Physics’ team from Paderborn University provided entertainment at the awards ceremony.

Prof. Dr. René Fahr, Vice-President for Transfer and Sustainability at Paderborn University, welcomed the award-winning pupils: “What you have achieved in the STEM subjects goes far beyond marks and school reports. You combine scientific thinking with curiosity, perseverance, and courage. These are the qualities that we, our economy, and our society need. Young people like you are shaping the world of tomorrow. We will support you on your journey and offer you our warmest congratulations on your awards.”

Long-standing sponsors include VerbundVolksbank OWL and the company dSPACE from Paderborn. The Claas Foundation in Harsewinkel and the group of sponsors from the Höxter district – comprising the companies HEGLA GmbH & Co KG (Beverungen), Mahrenholz GmbH (Beverungen), and Vauth-Sagel GmbH (Brakel) – also fund the Business Sponsorship Award.

“The innovative strength of our local economy will benefit from the curiosity, spirit of discovery, and talent of the next generation. As a regional co-operative bank, we want to encourage young people to pursue their enthusiasm for STEM subjects. By recognising their academic achievements, we are laying the foundations for them, as the skilled workers of tomorrow, to strengthen our business hub in East Westphalia-Lippe and keep it dynamic,” emphasises Thorsten Heggen, press spokesperson for VerbundVolksbank OWL eG.

“Around 280 award-winning pupils impressively demonstrate just how much STEM talent there is in our region. It’s wonderful to see the commitment and enthusiasm with which young people are engaging with Mathematics, Computer Science, natural sciences, and technology. As a long-standing sponsor, we are therefore delighted to support the business community’s incentive award,” says Bernd Schäfers-Maiwald of dSPACE.

Prof. Fahr sums it up: “I am delighted that, once again this year, we are sending a strong signal together in support of education, science, and future-oriented skills.”
