Lecture series ‘Beethoven – work in progress…’: Gustav Nottebohm and research into Beethoven’s sketches

Location: Kuppelsaal HfM Detmold

During the 2026/27 winter semester, the public lecture series organised by the Musicology Seminar Detmold/Paderborn will focus on the works and creative processes of Ludwig van Beethoven. On Wednesday 4 November, Dr. Susanne Cox will give a lecture on the topic ‘Gustav Nottebohm: Pioneer and Trailblazer in the Study of Beethoven’s Sketches’. The event will take place from 6.15 pm to 7.45 pm in the Kuppelsaal at the Detmold University of Music and is open to all interested parties. Admission is free; no registration is required.

The lecture series is organised by the academy project‘Beethoven’s Workshop: Genetic Textual Criticism and Digital Music Edition’, which is based at the Musicology Seminar Detmold/Paderborn and the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn. The lectures will not only examine the composer’s compositional thinking as revealed in Beethoven’s manuscripts, but will also consider the context for subsequent scholarship on his work. This will be achieved, for example, through insights into the history of Beethoven collections and research into his sketches. To conclude the lecture series, the first digital edition of a sketchbook – produced as part of the ‘Beethoven’s Workshop’ project – will also be presented.

Further information on the lecture series, as well as an overview of the remaining dates, can be found on the event page.
