„Physics and Applications of Carbon Nanomembranes“

The collective “single-file” motion of water molecules through natural and artificial nanoconduits inspires the development of high-performance membranes for water separation. In my talk, I will discuss the advantages of such transport mechanism in comparison to conventional polymer separation membranes, which are governed by the solution-diffusion mechanism. A seemingly ideal material with artificial nanoconduits are carbon nanomembranes (CNMs) which combine an extremely high areal density of nanoconduits with a remarkable ion rejection. I will sketch the development of CNMs which are made by cross-linking self-assembled monolayers via exposure with low-energy electrons. Characterization of 1.2 nm thick CNMs reveals an extremely high water permeance of about 700 LMH/bar (≈ 10-4 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1) as well as a remarkable high ion resistance that is comparable to values of pure planar lipid bilayers. Forward osmosis experiments with ions demonstrate a remarkable performance of these ultrathin membranes.
