Hoch hinaus im Paderkletterpark

Exkursion zum Paderkletterpark am 22.08.2021
Als zweites Team Event ging es am 22.08. hoch hinaus an den Fischteichen von Paderborn. Im Paderkletterpark konnten unsere Teilnehmenden in geführten Zweierteams durch verschiedene Parcours klettern und sich mit viel Adrenalin auspowern.
 

Besuch der Externsteine am 22. Juli 2021

Das Welcome-Buddy-Programm ist zum 1. Juli 2021 wieder neu an den Start gegangen und konnte fernab der Online-Formate der letzten Monate mit der ersten gemeinsamen Outdoor Exkursion zu den Externsteinen begeistern.

Das Buddy-Programm setzt sich aus bildungsinländischen Studierenden und internationalen Studierenden mit und ohne Fluchthintergrund zusammen. Gemeinsam bestritt die neue Gruppe einen Ausflug zu den historischen Externsteinen im Teutoburger Wald mit Gipfelaufstieg und anschließendem Waldspaziergang. Auf den Spuren der Germanen hatten die Teilnehmenden die Möglichkeit, sich über verschiedene kulturelle Aspekte ihrer eigenen Hintergründe auszutauschen und ihre Deutschkentnisse zu vertiefen.

Wir sind froh, dass das Welcome Programm trotz der Pandemie weiterläuft und freuen uns auf weitere gemeinsame Aktivitäten!
 

2020

Tour to the Heinz-Nixdorf-MuseumsForum on January 23, 2020

On January 23, 2020, another group of students of our preparatory German language course, refugees and non-refugees, visited the Heinz-Nixdorf-Museum. The trip was organized by the student assistens of the DAAD projekt Welcome - Studierende engagieren sich für Flüchtlinge. As always, there was a lot to discover about the history, presence and future of information technology.

 

The funding of refugees continues!

We are happy to announce that the funding of refugees by NRWege continues in 2020! Our application for the programm "NRWege 2020" was approved by DAAD. From 1.4.2020 until 31.12.2022, refugees can attend our well-proven German language courses be free of charge. And it gets even better: We will be able to offer as well additional courses for degree students and scholarships for refugee degree students. More information will follow shortly.

From Januar to March 2020, refugees in our DSH courses will be funded by the DAAD-programm Integra.

We also applied to continue the projects "Welcome -Studierende engagieren sich für Flüchtlinge", "Integra Studium und Beruf" (workshops for job market integration) and "Integra Studienkolleg" (foundation college). As soon as we know the results, we will inform you here.

2019

Three years of NRWege

Since 2017, the attendance of refugees in our preparatory DSH courses has been funded by the DAAD programm NRWege. In this period, as much as 237 refugees have been funded for at least three months, mainly longer, to attend our preparatory DSH courses. With 125 successful graduates, more than half of them have aquired the German language proficiency certificate (DSH) and reached the course goal. They have fulfilled the language requirements to pursue universtity studies in German language. Congratulations! We are pleased that the project NRWege, which ends on 31.12.2019, has been that successful!

iDA Inhouse Workshop "Interkulturelle Kompetenz Arabische Länder", 26.06.2019

Within the DAAD funding programs for refugees, International Office invited to the iDA-Inhouse-Seminar „Interkulturelle Kompetenz arabische Länder“ (intercultural competence Arabic countries) on June 26, 2019.

The seminar aimed at a good interaction of university staff with students and partners of the "Arabic World“. It focussed on the field of higher education. At Paderborn university, the seminar met with considerable interest by administrative and faculty staff and was completely booked out.

DAAD study on the integration of refugees at German universities - findings from the university funding programs for refugees

For the time being, the study consists of two parts and publishes the current findings on refugees who wish to study in Germany. The results are available in German language only.

New DAAD project for refugees: "Integra Studium und Beruf"

In order to continue the assistance of refugees after the preparatory German language course as well, Paderborn University launches a further DAAD project as of April 2019:

The project "Integra Studium und Beruf" (Integra Study and Work) not only provides German languages courses aiming at the DSH, but also soft skills for the succeeding degree  studies and eventually the integration into the job market. For this scope, "Integra Studium und Beruf" offers a series of workshops which are open for refugees and other international students. The project is funded by BMBF and is being carried out in cooperation with other institutions within the university, but also with external partners.

Winter semester 2018/19

In 2018, an average of 76 refugees attended our preparatory German language courses throughout the year. Other are qualifying themselves in the foundation college "Studienkolleg an der Universität Paderborn" for university entrance in Germany. More and more manage to graduate from our German language courses successfully and have acquired the DSH (German language proficiency exam for university entrance). A total of 86 refugees has already enrolled for a degree course at Paderborn University - their dream of studying in Germany has become reality.

Start of November intake at the Foundation College

Refugees who did not have the chance to qualify for university studies in their home country, may under certain condition acquire their university entrance qualification to degree courses in the field of technic, science or economics at the foundation college "Studienkolleg an der Universität Paderborn". In November 2018, 24 new participants set off for university entrance. Further 13 will graduate in December. Good luck to everybody!

Tour to the Heinz-Nixdorf-MuseumsForum

Our student assistents in the DAAD project Welcome organzied on November 13 once more a tour to the Heinz-Nixdorf-Museum, the world's biggest computer museum. As much as 28 members of our preparatory German language course, refugees and non-refugees, set off together on this time journey of 5000 years. It took them from the first written characers in Mesopotamia to the most current developments in the field of computer science. Everybody had a lot of fun!

 

Refugee has become student parliament member

In July 2018, the 47th student parliament of Paderborn University has been elected. One of the elected parliament representatives is a refugee. Bashar Almhanna, new member of the list "Sozial, Aktiv & International", has received as much as 67 voices. Congratulations!

DAAD publication "Zukunftswege"

The publication (in German language) sums up the results of the German Academic Exchange Service's (DAAD) conference which took place in March 2018 in Berlin. Almost 400 representatives and members of German universities, scientific institutions, foundations, ministries as well as funded refugees came together to discuss the achievements and challenges of integrating refugees into German universities.

Theatre impression

Kammerspiele, the main theater in Paderborn, kindly gave us ten free tickets for our refugee welcome projects. So, on Sunday, Juni 10, 2018, a group of students enjoyed Shakespeare's Richard III in a  modern setting.

DSH Quarter 1 / 2018

Right in the first week of January, a new DSH quarter has started. It will end with the final exams in late March. 37% of the ca. 230 participants are refugees or have been granted subsidiary protection. Almost a third (28%) of these are female.

The portrait of a Syrian DSH Course participant has been published in the current issue of the university magazine PUZ (digital page 48 + 49).

Be a Refugee-Buddy

The International Office starts the new year with a buddy program for refugees at our university.  Applications for the Refugee Buddy Program are possible as of now!

2017

Arabic office hours

The office hours in Arabic language will not take place from 14.12.2017 till 08.01.2018.

Syrian Night

As before, almost one third of the DSH course participants are refugees, most of them from Syria. In order to not only introduce German language and literature to the refugees, but to also present Syrian culture in Germany, Interational Office and ASV organized a Syrian Night. It took place Wednesday, November 22, in lecture hall G.

Besides an exciting quiz and an interesting presentation on Syrian culture, a dance performance and a Syrian band entertained the ca. 200 guests. Afterwards, a buffett with tasty Syrian specalities was opened. After everybody had their fill, students of many nationalities danced together to Syrian music until late in the evening.

DFB Soccer Museum

Organized by the DAAD/Integra project "Welcome", a group of DSH Course participants travelled to Dortmund on November 18, 2017, in order to visit the DFB Soccer Museum. There was a lot to see: the 3D cinema, bringing back to life memories of important soccer moments, the treasure chamber displaying important trophies or a soccer quiz. The participants also grabbed a ball themselves and played some soccer in the pitch.

Intenational Round Table "Kaffeetreff"

The round table <link studium internationale-studierende fluechtlinge-willkommen aktuelles internationaler-kaffeetreff>Kaffeetreff  for international students meets every Wednesday from 13.30 - 15.00 h in the IBZ (Internationales Begegnungszentrum) right in front of the International Office. A group of DSH Course student who join the DAAD programm NRWege visited the Kaffeetreff  on November 15, 2017. Further visits are in preparation.However, if you wish to visit the Kaffeetreff, you do not need to wait for an arranged visit. All students are welcome to join the Kaffeetreff  whenever they want, as a group or as an individual.

New DSH Quarter

July 10, 2017: A further DSH quarter has begun. 87 of 218 participants are refugees. Among the successful graduates of the previous quarter are five refugees. One of them reached the outstanding result DSH-3.

Campus Tours

In order to introduce the university facilities to the students of the Welcome Courses, Campus Tours are being arranged on a regular basis by our DAAD-Integra project Welcome. Some of the stations are the Library, the Service Center, the General Students' Committe AsTA and of course the Mensa. Here you find some impressions on the tour of June 29, 2017 (photos will follow shortly).

DSH for Refugees

  • April 10, 2017: The current DSH course has started. 92 of 286 participants are asylum seekers or recognized refugees. Since January 2017 refugees in our DSH Courses are supported by the funding programm NRWege (by MIWF/DAAD), for which Paderborn University had successfully applied.
  •  In the summer semester 2017, 14 refugees have enrolled in a degree course at Paderborn University after having successfully completed the DSH Course. A further DSH Course graduate has already enrolled in the winter semester 2016/17.
  • March 23, 2017: Another 10 refugees have passed the DSH examination. Some of them had initially attended the university's Welcome Course (German language course for asylum seekers) and switched to the DSH Course after having passed the A2 exam.
  • As of 2017, refugees in the DSH courses are funded by the programm NRWege ins Studium  (DAAD/MKW).

Welcome Courses

The project Integra (DAAD / BMBF) enables asylum seekers from the city and district of Paderborn to participate in the university's Welcome Courses. After successful completion of the A2 level, the participants are guaranteed a place in the intermediate level I (= GER level B1) of the DSH course.

2016

  • December 22, 2016: The test results of the current DSH course have been announced. We are pleased that four of the successful graduates are refugees. They haved passed the DSH (German language proficiency exam for university admission) at Paderborn University and are now fulfilling the language requirements for a German taught degree course. 

  • Funded the DAAD programm Integra, refugees can participate free of charge in the DSH courses of Paderborn University. The first 37 Integra-funded refugees attend the course as of July 2017 on different course levels. In the October 2016 intake, 62 prospective students are funded by Integra.
