Not only for all companies directly affected by the Energy Efficiency Act, but also for many manufacturing companies with a range of heat sources and sinks, a more efficient use of the energy used is a competitive criterion of increasing importance. For many companies, however, the question arises as to where and how to start.
The "Using process waste heat" event on Tuesday 29 October 2024 brought together representatives from companies from different sectors and of different sizes at Zukunftsmeile 2 in Paderborn. Together with the partners of the "HeatTransPlan" project(www.heattransplan.de), the initial aim was to gain a better understanding of the news and foreseeable legal requirements for companies as part of the Energy Efficiency Act. Project manager Dr Florian Schlosser from Paderborn University then presented the objectives of the project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics, and what contributions can be expected from it in the form of processes, technical heat pump solutions and, later, a decision support system for companies. Marcel Kirsch-Jessel, from project partner Limón, presented the requirements and procedures for creating a heat register as well as funding opportunities for implementation. These were supplemented by Gabriele Paßgang from the Effizienz-Agentur NRW, or efa for short, at least for companies based in NRW. The second part of the event focussed on the possibility of using process mining to extract or calculate the data required for the heat register and heat pump design from existing process data. Katharina Brennig and David Zapata Gonzalez from Paderborn University presented the method as a basic tool for improving (business) processes as well as its specific application in the field of energy management. Finally, Michael Kemkes from project partner InnoZent OWL presented the participation opportunities for companies as part of the project and gave an outlook on the offers for companies starting in 2025, such as events, workshops and also an exchange of experience on the topic of heat cadastre. Workshops and also an exchange of experience on the topic of heat cadastre. All participants were very satisfied with the kick-off event and pointed out practical points of contact around the topic of heat cadastre, energy management and also an in-depth look at the process mining method.

About HeatTransPlan
The project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, aims to utilise waste heat from industrial processes with the help of robust heat pump and storage solutions for a process heat range above 100 degrees Celsius. As a result, a digital decision support system based on energy and production data will determine an optimal heat utilisation path.
Companies interested in contributing to the project with their individual case study are welcome to contact either:
- Michael Kemkes(mkemkes@innozentowl.de) or
- Dr Florian Schlosser(florian.schlosser@upb.de)
For generally interested companies, there will probably be an offer in the form of a moderated experience exchange round from the beginning of 2025, in which current results and developments in the field of waste heat utilisation will also be informed and discussed. Interested companies can already get in touch with Michael Kemkes(mkemkes@innozentowl.de).
