PAUL - the campus management System

PAUL is Paderborn University’s internal campus management system. This Web based solution is used for the online administration of all processes from applying for a university place, enrolment and taking courses to sitting examinations. PAUL is also used to manage student and examination data.

Why PAUL ?

With the introduction of the Bachelor's and Master's degree courses, the number of examinations and the associated organisational effort have increased significantly at Paderborn University.

Student numbers have increased considerably since the 2008/2009 winter semester. Following the abolition of compulsory military service in 2011, the double Abitur year 2013 also led to a further increase in student numbers.

The established IT systems were only able to manage the new degree programmes to a very limited extent. They were no longer suitable for the examination administration of the new Bachelor's/Master's teaching degree programmes that started in the 2011/12 winter semester.

In view of these challenges, Paderborn University decided to introduce a campus management solution.

Following a Europe-wide call for proposals at the end of 2007, the decision was made in favour of the Campus.net solution from Datenlotsen Informationssysteme GmbH, Hamburg, whose solution for the application process has been used successfully at Paderborn University since the 2007 winter semester.

The requirements of the various examination regulations can be presented transparently in PAUL for both students and lecturers.

Campus management System

A campus management system such as PAUL aims to provide a holistic, web-based mapping of a university's resources and stakeholders. It maps the specific relationships and enables their participatory integration.

Students, teaching staff and the administration are integrated into the system, as are the available rooms, courses and study regulations.

The relationships between them are diverse.

For example, courses assigned to specific study regulations take place in specific rooms and are completed with a grade according to a study regulation, which is included in an overall grade at the end of the degree programme.
