About Iris Güldenpenning

I studied sports science at the University of Göttingen (2000-2005) and did my PhD at the University of Bielefeld in the Neurocognition and Action Research Group (Prof. T. Schack; 2007-2013). I also spent the beginning of my postdoc phase at Bielefeld University (until 2014), in the Center of Excellence - Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC). Since 2014, I have been employed at Paderborn University in the Psychology and Movement Science Group (Prof. M. Weigelt), where I habilitated in 2022 and obtained the the venia legendi for sports science with a focus on sports psychology.

Evaluating research data is a bit like unwrapping presents: If you always knew in advance exactly what was inside, it would be pretty boring.

Research

Research Interests

My research focus within sport psychology is on laboratory-experimental studies. I investigate basic processes of perception and action that are relevant in the context of sport (e.g., anticipation, action conflicts). I am guided by popular paradigms of experimental psychology (e.g., priming, Stroop task, mental rotation, Posner-Cuing paradigm) and I am particularly interested in deceptive actions in sports, especially head fakes in basketball.

DFG funded projects:

- Production Costs of Head-Fakes in Basketball - Influencing Factors in the individual setting and in the interaction scenario

09.2021 – 08.2024; PI Dr. Iris Güldenpenning; DFG GU 1683/1-2)

- Underlying Mechanisms and Constraints of Head Fakes in Sports

(4.2016-3.2019; PI Dr. Iris Güldenpenning; DFG GU 1683/1-1 in Cooperation with Prof. Wilfried Kunde, Würzburg University)

I cannot "make" anyone learn. I try to create an environment in which students can acquire competencies. Whether they ultimately do so is their responsibility.
