- Brief Profile
Prof. Dr. Daniel Beverungen holds the Chair of Information Systems, in particular Business Information Systems, at Paderborn University and is Vice Dean for Processes and Cooperation at the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics. He studied Information Systems at the University of Paderborn and subsequently worked as a research assistant, academic advisor, and deputy professor at the Institute for Information Systems at the WWU Münster (Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Dr. h.c. Jörg Becker). His research focuses on service research, business process management, information modeling, and the design and emergence of innovative information systems. His research findings have been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and presented at numerous national and international conferences. In addition, Prof. Dr. Beverungen has played a leading role in the development of various industry standards for technical services (DIN SPEC 33453, DIN PAS 1091, DIN PAS 1094). He is an editor of various academic journals - for example, a Department Editor for Business Process Management of the journal BISE - as well as an editor and organizer of academic conferences and workshops - such as a member of the program committee and conference chair at the 18th International Conference on Information Systems. From 2016 to 2018, he held the office of President of the Special Interest Group on Services (SIGSVC) in the Association for Information Systems (AIS). Current leadership positions include Chair of the Board of the Software Innovation Lab (SI-Lab) at Paderborn University, Chair of the Steering Committee of the Software Innovation Campus Paderborn (SICP), and Academic Director of the Service Science Competence Center at the European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS). He has been a visiting researcher at TU Berlin, the University of Melbourne, the Queensland University of Technology, the University of Queensland, and the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST).
- Research Interests
For almost 20 years, we have been developing new methods and tools to develop, deliver and analyze digital services. Our conceptualization of intelligent services (Smart Services), the DIN SPEC 33453 “Development of digital service systems” and our research work on digital service ecosystems have been formative.
Business process management (BPM) also has a strong influence on our research work. We investigate dynamic effects that transform business processes in everyday operations. A specific research focus is the question of how structural process innovations can be developed from workarounds.
Under the umbrella of the SICP, we develop new solution perspectives, functions and usage scenarios for ERP systems such as SAP S4/HANA, digital data rooms and platforms with strong industry partners. One particular area of expertise is our use case Networked Cultural Platforms as part of the Data Space Culture project - an IT flagship project of the German government.
- Teaching Areas
The methodological focus of our courses in the Bachelor's degree program in Business Information Systems and in the Master's degree programs in Business Information Systems (WINFO) and Management Information Systems (MIS) is on business process management, information modeling and the design and use of business information systems (in particular ERP systems) as socio-technical systems. In terms of content and function, the focus is on the development, marketing and provision of digital services (smart services) in the IT industry, the high-tech industry and the service industry.
- Outreach
At the Software Innovation Campus Paderborn (SICP), Prof. Dr. Beverungen is spokesperson of the steering committee and Chairman of the Board of the Software Innovation Lab (SI-Lab), the largest central research facility at Paderborn University. The SICP is an innovation campus where more than 30 professors from all five faculties develop digital innovations with more than 40 companies from all over Germany.
