Keep all applications, the operating system and the anti-virus program up-to-date with updates.
The simplest way to do this for most systems and applications is by opening your preferences, going to "Updates" and turning on Automatic Updates.
Install Updates regularly and as soon as possible when they are available.
Software that no longer receives updates or support can be a security risk and should possibly be uninstalled.
