Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Protection
The occupational health and safety specialists advise and support the university management and all managers on all matters relating to health and safety at work, accident prevention and the design of work to suit human needs; they are, of course, also available to all staff as points of contact on these issues.
The workplace prevention officers provide a point of contact for health, social or work-related difficulties and crises – including for addiction prevention or in cases of substance use disorders. They operate independently, treat your concerns confidentially and are bound by a duty of confidentiality.
The BEM is on offer for all employees who have been unable to work for more than six weeks within a year, or who are seeking support as a preventative measure. It helps to restore and maintain the ability to work. The aim is to strengthen health-promoting resources and reduce health-damaging stressors in the workplace.
The Family Service Office provides advice on balancing parenthood with work or study, and offers support in organising childcare. Relatives of people in need of care are given an initial overview of the support available, respite care options and the Care Leave Act.
The Research Unit offers advice on national and European research funding, on the reporting of inventions, and on their patenting and commercialisation. It provides support with contractual matters relating to research projects and advises on applications submitted to the Commission for Research and Early-Career Researchers.

Through free coaching, events and workshops, you’ll gain practical insights into how to approach academic work from an entrepreneurial perspective.
As part of its workplace health management programme, the Healthy University offers a wide range of initiatives on offer, from active exercise programmes and health services to themed campaign days and health checks and measurements. All these initiatives are brought together in a health guide for staff, which is published annually.
The Equal Opportunities Officer provides information on the University’s equality measures and funding programmes (e.g. coaching and mentoring programmes, funding streams). She also offers advice and support on all matters relating to equality, such as staff recruitment and cases of discrimination.
University Sports cover a wide range of activities and encompass all aspects of Exercise and Health. There are courses on offer, amongst other things, for exercise breaks right at the workplace (Pausenexpress), as well as a wide range of courses from A to Z. There are also preventive exercise programmes specifically for staff, including at the GTZ, to help them stay active and fit.
The International Office in Section 3 promotes international cooperation, organises continuing/further education and professional development programmes on topics relating to internationalisation, and supports staff, teaching staff and students with their international mobility and projects.
Internal Further Training and Continuing Education
The in-house training and continuing/further education programme offers a wide range of courses for all staff groups, covering topics such as communication, work techniques, information technology, personal and social skills, leadership, health and safety, and environmental protection, amongst others. It also acts as the point of contact for enquiries regarding external continuing/further education and professional development programmes.
The (Paderborn University) Writing Centre supports teaching staff in designing classes on the teaching of writing and in advising students on academic writing. Services are on offer, including the ‘TEACHING WRITING’ continuing/further education, professional development programme, the Textograph programme, as well as workshops and advisory services for students, PhD candidates and teaching staff.
Mentoring programmes for female PhD students & postdocs
The mentoring programme for female doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers supports female academics in their career planning and in building networks. In addition to the 15-month mentoring programme, it offers networking events for female doctoral candidates in their first year of study, one-to-one coaching sessions, final-stage support groups and peer mentoring for postdoctoral researchers.
The Collegium musicum comprises four musical groups: the Uni Big Band, the UniSono University Choir, the Wind Ensemble and the University Orchestra, all of which perform regularly in concert. In principle, anyone interested can join one of these groups, provided there is a place available in the group of their choice.
The Paderborn PhD & Postdoc Support Office is the central point of contact for PhD students and postdocs at Paderborn University, supporting them from the start of their PhD right through to their individual career planning afterwards. Services on offer include peer coaching, PhD lunches and strategic career development discussions.
Staff Council for Technical and Administration Staff
The Staff Council represents the interests of all staff in the technical and administration departments. They provide advice on matters relating to working life and are always willing to listen to suggestions and complaints, which are, of course, treated in confidence. Possible topics include, for example, recruitment and promotion, remote working, and cases of conflict.
The WPR provides confidential advice on all workplace-related matters. Our responsibilities include, amongst other things, participating in and helping to shape recruitment, fixed-term contracts, contract extensions, dismissals, working time and holiday arrangements, health and safety measures, and service agreements. In the event of a dispute, the WPR is available to offer advice at any time.
Staff Development is the central point of contact for all matters relating to the development and training of staff. Services on offer include, amongst other things, the induction of new staff, continuing/further education, professional development [je nach Kontext], management tools and career planning.
The Representative Body for People with Severe Disabilities offers assistance with applying for disability cards, advice on chronic or acute illnesses, advice on selecting and procurement of assistive devices, and takes part in job interviews and BEM procedures.
Higher Education Development Unit (HEDU) for Innovation in Education and University Didactics
The Centre for Higher Education Pedagogy offers continuing/further education and exchange opportunities covering all aspects of teaching, including a certificate programme in higher education pedagogy, consultation hours, classroom observation, evaluation, e-learning, exchange programmes, teaching coaching for professors, tutorial programmes, and advice on organisation and degree programme development
The University Library provides the entire university with academic literature and information and offers, amongst other things, advisory services and training, an infrastructure for academic publishing (Open Access), as well as services tailored to specific user groups (e.g. seminar collections for teaching staff, reference collections for junior professors and professors)
Welcome Services act as a central point of contact, advising and supporting international researchers and staff, as well as their hosts, on matters relating to the day-to-day organisation of their stay. Welcome Services run a mailing list providing information on current events and organise networking opportunities on offer at the UPB
Centre for Information and Media Technology Services (ZIM)
The Centre for Information and Media Technology Services (ZIM) is the University of Paderborn’s IT service provider. As well as offering basic services such as Wi-Fi access, email, data storage and various media services, it has a wide range of other services on offer designed to improve your work in administration, research and teaching.
The Language Centre (ZfS) at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities is the central point of contact for all students and staff at Paderborn University with an interest in languages. Services on offer include language courses for staff, which are offered in collaboration with the Internal Continuing/Further Education and Professional Development department.
