Projektbeschreibung
Mythos Kracht.

English Summary
Rhizomatic Aesthetics, Ironic Cultures of Remembrance and Discourses about Conservatism in the Works and Reception of Christian Kracht (working title)

My dissertation analyses the aesthetics of one of the most controversial authors in contemporary German literature, Christian Kracht. The focus of my project lies on how Kracht’s fiction and essayistic prose reflects and comments upon the major discourses and debates of modernity and postmodernity, most notably the antagonism between liberalism and conservatism. By combining reader-response criticism and post-structuralism with the critical theory of the Frankfurt School and 20th century theories of conservatism, I approach Kracht’s oeuvre as a form of cultural and philosophical critique of the globalizing technological consumer society of the 20th and 21st century. Furthermore, I argue that Kracht’s texts are literary examples of a new German cultural conservatism, since, among other reasons, they are characterised by a certain elitism, which expresses itself through semiological sophistication and irony.

Kracht’s conservatism has been the subject of many feuilletonistic debates, as most recently in the controversy over his new novel, Imperium (2012). However, it has not yet been analysed in detail. My research fills this crucial gap in the scholarship on contemporary German literature. Furthermore, it contributes to the study of conservatism as a contemporary mass cultural phenomenon, which in recent years has become a trend among the younger generations of Germans.

My work’s contribution to automatism research lies in its explorations of the semiotic, discursive, and social processes, which I describe using the oeuvre of Kracht and the theories that inform my interpretations. These processes, which work intra- and intersubjectively, hence on the micro as well as the macro level, range from individual meaning-making to the development and tradition of collective life models. This often happens unconsciously; without planning it brings about semiotic, discursive, and social structures (cf. Bublitz 1999). I am especially interested in the interplay between the synthesis of meaning and totalitarian societal tendencies. As I argue on the basis of the findings of the Research Training Group “Automatismen,” these connections can be described using Kracht’s texts, but they have also much agency in reality.

The dissertation is written in German.
