The DSH is the German language test for university entrance.

It tests the language skills required for international applicants to study a subject at C1 level in the fields of listening comprehension, reading comprehension, academic language structures, text production and oral expression. Applicants should be able to understand lectures by listening, take notes, deal with subject-related texts and develop oral and written forms of presentation.

Paderborn University offers international applicants the opportunity to take German language courses to prepare for the DSH and the subsequent degree programme.

We offer courses with target levels A2, B1, B2 and C1.

You can join the preparatory German courses twice a year (April and October).

The level at which you can join is determined by a digital placement test.

Examinations at the end of each course level determine participation in the next higher course level. If you fail, you can repeat the failed level once, regardless of the result.

At the end of the upper level, you take the DSH exam, which can be taken four times a year (March, June, September, December). Passing the DSH is a prerequisite for admission to a degree programme.

All DSH courses at Paderborn University offer training units on the skills of listening comprehension, reading comprehension, text production and oral expression.

Unfortunately, it is not possible for external language students to take the DSH at Paderborn University. If you have the desire and the opportunity to study at our university, please submit your application exclusively via the International Office. They will also provide you with all the information you need about preparatory German courses.

Course fees: 500 € per quarter

Please pay the course fees only in the period for the corresponding quarter in which you participate in the course:

Payment date for quarter 1 January to March: 01.12. - 31.12. (deadline)

Payment date for quarter 2 April - June: 01.03. - 31.03. (deadline)

Payment date for quarter 3 July - September: 01.06. - 30.06. (deadline)

Payment date for quarter 4 October - December: 01.09. - 30.09. (deadline)

Payments that are not made within this period cannot be allocated. Late payment will result in the loss of your place on the course.

Please transfer the course fee to the following account:

Teaching units: 240 teaching units per quarter

Cancellation policy: Please note that course fees can only be refunded if you cancel before the start of the course.

Terms of payment: If the fee is not received in time before the start of the course, you will not be allowed to take part in the course.

Payment by instalments is not possible.

1. Teilnahmebescheinigung

Die Teilnahmebescheinigung für alle Unterrichtsstufen wird frühestens eine Woche, spätestens zwei Wochen nach Kursbeginn über die Lehrkraft im Unterricht verteilt.

2. Ferienbescheinigung

Die Ferienbescheinigung für die Grundstufe, Mittelstufe I und Mittelstufe II wird am Tag der letzten schriftlichen Prüfung über die Lehrkraft am Ende des Kurses verteilt. Eine vorzeitige Ausstellung ist aus organisatorischen Gründen nicht möglich. Potenzielle Arbeitgeber können bis zur Aushändigung der Bescheinigung auf unsere Website unter „Termine: Kurse“ verwiesen werden mit dem Hinweis, dass die Bescheinigung nachgereicht wird.

Die Ferienbescheinigung für die Oberstufe erfolgt mit der mündlichen Prüfung. Hier ist aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Ergebnisse eine vorzeitige Ausstellung der Ferienbescheinigung für die Oberstufe nicht möglich.

3. Ergebnisbescheinigung

Die Ergebnisbescheinigung für die Grundstufe, Mittelstufe I und Mittelstufe II wird über die Lehrkraft während der Abschlussberatung am Ende des Kurses verteilt. Die Lehrkräfte der entsprechenden Kurse werden dafür einen gesonderten Termin mit den Teilnehmern vereinbaren und diesen Termin digital mitteilen.

Teilnehmer*innen der Oberstufe erhalten lediglich bei einer nicht bestandenen Prüfung eine Ergebnisbescheinigung. Bei den Prüfungsergebnissen DSH-1, DSH-2 und DSH-3 erhalten die Teilnehmer*innen das DSH-Zeugnis.

Wichtiger Hinweis:

Bitte bewahren Sie alle Bescheinigungen und Zeugnisse sorgfältig auf. Sollten Sie Bescheinigungen an Dritte weiterleiten, empfehlen wir Ihnen eine Kopie weiterzuleiten, so dass die originale Bescheinigung bei Ihren Unterlagen verbleibt.

Aus datenschutzrechtlichen Gründen können wir keine Bescheinigungen über vergangene absolvierte Kurse ausstellen, die älter als 5 Jahre sind.

Hier verweisen wir auf die Richtlinien über die Aufbewahrung, Archivierung und Vernichtung von Unterlagen der Universität Paderborn vom 06. Dezember 2021.

Demnach werden Prüfungs- und Teilnahmelisten von Deutschkursteilnehmer*innen nach 5 Jahren vernichtet.

The examination format

The DSH consists of a written and an oral examination.

The written exam

It consists of three parts and is assessed with a total of 70%:

1. listening comprehension (20%)

A text of 5500 to 7000 characters is presented twice. You are allowed to take notes during the presentation. You should answer questions in keywords or your own formulations, reproduce key aspects of the content and/or present the idea of the text. You will have 10 minutes after the first lecture and 40 minutes after the second lecture to complete the test.

2. reading comprehension (20%) and scientific language structures (10%)

You will work on a text of 4500 to 6000 characters, which may also be accompanied by a graphic, a diagram or a chart. You will be asked to recognise and paraphrase grammatical structures from this text. This part of the examination lasts approx. 90 minutes.

3. text production (20%)

You will write a text of approximately 250 words on a study-related and science-orientated topic. You will be given key points to integrate into your text product. This part of the examination lasts 70 minutes.

The oral examination

The oral examination consists of one part and is graded at 30%.

You give a short presentation on a topic for which you are given information in the form of a text, a graphic, a chart or a diagram. You then discuss the topic with your examination partner. The oral examination lasts approx. 35 minutes (20 minutes preparation and 15 minutes in front of the examination board).

Determination of the examination result

DSH-1: with at least 57% in both the written (39.9 points) and oral (17.1 points) examinations.

DSH-2: at least 67% in both the written (46.9 points) and oral (20.1 points) examinations.

DSH-3: at least 82% in both the written (57.4 points) and oral (24.6 points) examinations.

Admission to the degree programme

At Paderborn University, an overall result of at least DSH-2 is a prerequisite for admission to all Bachelor's degree programmes. Information on the language requirements for other degree programmes can be found here.

Can the exam be repeated?

The DSH can be repeated once.

If the result is DSH-1, further retakes are permitted.

Failed DSHs at other universities are taken into account in this procedure.
