Inhalt Life in and around the university has become increasingly culturally diverse. We often interact with people of different backgrounds and do not always have the time to be aware of the complex dynamics at play in such interactions. Taking a closer look at the way we communicate and relate to others and also reflecting on our own and other people’s cultural practices, values and assumptions can be very helpful in overcoming barriers that impede fruitful and effective interaction with people of differing backgrounds.
So how does one become interculturally competent, and what is the meaning of culture in this context? What is your personal communication style and how is it perceived by culturally others? What types of cultural challenges have you experienced in Germany and elsewhere and how did you deal with these? How would you define your own cultural self? Using concepts and tools from the vast academic field of Intercultural Communication in practical ways and taking an interactive approach, we will cover these and similar issues in an informative and enjoyable way. The workshop will raise your intercultural awareness and improve your intercultural skills in powerful ways. It is also a wonderful opportunity for you to connect with other members of the university, share your intercultural experiences and explore new ideas in a positive and supportive environment.
The workshop will be held in English. However, German may also be spoken to give everyone a chance to participate. Perfect English is not expected from anyone wishing to register for the course. So do not let the fear of making language mistakes hold you back. Upon completion of the workshop you will receive a certificate of participation. Academic and non-academic members of the university, international doctoral students and postdocs are all invited to join the course.
