Language skills for bachelor degree programmes

Bachelor of Education (teaching degree programmes) and supplementary subjects

Bachelor of Education
Admission to the course for teaching English within the framework of the university’s bachelor teacher training programmes is open to students with proficiency in English at Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Applicants can provide evidence of their proficiency in English with, in particular, a German “Abitur” certificate on which Level B2 is indicated or a North Rhine-Westphalian “Abitur” certificate on which it is indicated that English was studied as a foreign language to at least A-level, with at least sufficient grades or 5 points (basic or advanced course).
Proficiency in English can also be proven with e.g. a TOEFL (Internet-based, 87 points), IELTS (5.5), Cambridge ESOL (FCE), UNIcert II or equivalent certificate. The certificate submitted must have been awarded within a maximum of two years of the start date of the semester for which the applicant wishes to enrol.
Proof of language skills is a prerequisite for enrolment.

Admission to the course for teaching French within the framework of the university’s bachelor teacher training programmes is open to students with proficiency in Spanish at Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Applicants can provide evidence of their proficiency in Spanish with, in particular, a German “Abitur” certificate on which Level B1 is indicated or a DELE B1 (“nivel inicial”) certificate. The certificate submitted must have been awarded within two years of the start date of the semester for which the applicant wishes to enrol.
Proof of language skills is a prerequisite for enrolment.
A language diagnostic test must be taken at the start of the course. It serves as a self-assessment of the student’s language level.

Supplementary subjects
Evidence of the language skills required for the subjects History, Protestant Religious Education, Catholic Religious Education and Philosophy for students on grammar and comprehensive school teaching degree programmes must already have been provided for admission to the university, in accordance with Paderborn University’s regulations governing supplementary subjects for teaching degree programmes leading to the award of a Bachelor of Education. Proof of language skills is a prerequisite for enrolment.

Bachelor of Arts (Bachelor degree programmes - Faculty of Arts and Humanities)

English Literature and Cultural Studies/English Linguistics

Enrolment in the above subjects requires proficiency in English at Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), in addition to the requirements set out in § 8 of the General Regulations. Applicants can provide evidence of their proficiency in English with, in particular, a German “Abitur” certificate on which Level B2 is indicated or a TOEFL (Internet–based, 87 points) or Cambridge ESOL (FCE) certificate. Proof of language skills is a prerequisite for enrolment.

Romance Studies/French

Proficiency in French is mandatory for the study of the language in the Romance Studies department. Enrolment on a French course requires proficiency in French at Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), in addition to the requirements set out in § 8 of the examination regulations for the dual bachelor degree programme offered by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Applicants can provide evidence of their proficiency in French with, in particular, a German “Abitur” certificate on which Level B1 is indicated or a DELF B1 (“niveau indépendant”) certificate. The certificate submitted must have been awarded within two years of the start date of the semester for which the applicant wishes to enrol. Proof of language skills is a prerequisite for enrolment.

Comparative Studies/Comparative Literature

Enrolment on a course in Comparative Studies/Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies requires proficiency in English at Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), in addition to the entry requirements for the dual bachelor degree programme set out in § 8 of the General Regulations. Proof of language skills is a prerequisite for enrolment. Proficiency in one of the Romance languages (French, Spanish or Italian) at Level B1 of the CEFR is also required. The applicant must possess proficiency in the respective Romance language prior to enrolment. Proof of language skills in the respective Romance language must be provided at the latest when registering for advanced modules. This proof must be submitted to the relevant course co-ordinator and is a prerequisite for participation in advanced modules. 

Applicants can provide evidence of their proficiency in English with, in particular, a German “Abitur” certificate on which Level B2 is indicated or a TOEFL (Internet–based, 87 points) IELTS (5.5), Cambridge ESOL (FCE) or UNIcert II certificate. Applicants can provide evidence of their proficiency in French with, in particular, a German “Abitur” certificate on which Level B1 is indicated or a DELF B1 (“niveau indépendant”) certificate. Applicants can provide evidence of their proficiency in Spanish with, in particular, a German “Abitur” certificate on which Level B1 is indicated or a DELE B1 (“nivel inicial”) or UNIcert I certificate. Applicants can provide evidence of their proficiency in Italian with, in particular, a German “Abitur” certificate on which Level B1 is indicated or a CELI 2-B1 or UNIcert I certificate.
The certificate submitted must have been awarded within a maximum of two years of the start date of the semester for which the applicant enrols or in which they first attend an advanced module.

Linguistics 

This course requires proficiency in English at Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). If the applicant completed the basic or advanced course in sixth form and achieved at least 5 points for this, they can submit their school leaving certificate, qualifying them for university, as evidence of their proficiency in English. Proficiency in English can also be proven with e.g. a TOEFL (Internet-based, 87 points) or Cambridge ESOL (FCE) certificate. Proof of language skills is a prerequisite for enrolment.
