What is a “numerus clausus” (NC)?

Definition: “Numerus clausus” (NC) refers to the lowest overall average “Abitur” (German university entrance qualification) grade required for admission to desired course, calculated retrospectively, i.e. after all applications have been received. (For dual degree programmes, see “Full admission”.).

The NC is therefore based on supply (number of places) and demand (number and average grades of prospective students) and is determined every semester. This means that it is not possible to say in advance how high the NC value for a particular semester will be, but prospective students can use the NC values from previous semesters as a good starting point for reference and comparison.
