FAQs

When do I need to apply for a leave of absence?

A request for leave of absence must be made by the following date at the latest:
1st quarter: 15 December
2nd quarter: 15 March
3rd quarter: 15 June
4th quarter: 15 September
Where the conditions for a leave of absence are fulfilled after the dates specified above, the International Office may decide to approve the application as a special case. Retrospective requests for leaves of absence for any previous quarter will not normally be considered or approved.

How do I apply?

The application must be made using the “Request for leave of absence from the DSH course” form and submitted to the International Office, together with the relevant required documentation. You may send your documents by post or submit them in person during the relevant office hours.

Is it also possible to obtain a leave of absence for the first quarter?

Leaves of absence are not generally permitted in the first quarter.

For how long can I suspend my enrolment on the course?

Leaves of absence are granted for a maximum of one quarter. If you wish to suspend your enrolment in the course for more than one quarter, you will need to submit a new request for each respective quarter. If after having suspended your enrollment in the DSH course for a quarter you would like to return to the course in Paderborn, you will need to re-enroll for the course through the International Office in good time. Please find out the enrolment times for the next quarter well in advance.

What will happen if my application for a leave of absence is incomplete?

Should any further documents be required, these will be requested by email (UniMail address). In the event that any missing documents are not submitted on time, the application will be deemed invalid and no leave of absence will be granted.

Can a leave of absence affect my residence permit?

Yes! “The residence permit [...] is always granted for a specific purpose of stay (e.g. attendance of German courses, course of study). The permit becomes invalid if this specific purpose is/can no longer be pursued (e.g. if you are no longer enrolled at a university). Consequently, you will no longer have a valid residence permit, regardless of the duration for which it was granted.” Please consult the immigration authorities to check that a leave of absence is possible and how this will affect your residence permit before submitting a request for leave of absence.

Am I guaranteed a place on the DSH course for the next quarter?

No. There is no guarantee that you will get a place on the DSH course for the next quarter.

Can I get a semester ticket?

No. Students on the DSH course are enrolled on a semester-by-semester basis only. If a DSH course student takes a leave of absence, they cease to be enrolled as a student of Paderborn University. This also means that they are not entitled to a semester ticket. Those taking a leave of absence cannot request to be enrolled as a student during this period.

Will I need to enroll again before the course recommences?

Yes. You will need to go to the International Office (please find out the enrolment times well in advance) to enroll for the DSH course during the enrolment period.
