Support for Teaching Abroad

Stays for teaching abroad purposes can be funded via the Erasmus+ program. Information on teaching abroad at a university outside the Erasmus+ area can be found in the section Mobility with Partner Countries - International Credit Mobility. In the following you will only find information on teaching stays within the Erasmus+ area in the Erasmus+ program countries.

ERASMUS+ teaching staff mobility (STA) within the Erasmus+ area

You want to teach a block seminar at Istanbul University? Or teach together with a colleague from Madrid? How about inviting a French NGO representative to teach at Paderborn University?

Erasmus+ makes all of this possible and also funds short stays abroad for guest lecturers. As a guest lecturer your stay abroad contributes to strengthening the European dimension of the host university, broadens the course content and enables you to share your experiences with colleagues in teaching and research (STA1). It is also possible to invite members of staff from companies in the Erasmus+ programme countries to come and teach at Paderborn (STA2).

General conditions

  • Who can apply and conditions of participation:
Teaching and academic staff at Paderborn University (STA1), who have an employment contract with UPB.
When inviting company staff (STA2): Employees of a public organisation or a company under private law in an ERASMUS programme country
  • A valid Erasmus+ cooperation agreement for STA with a partner university
  • Duration of teaching assignment:  2 - 60 days (not including travel days)
  • Scope of teaching assignment: at least 8 teaching hours over one week (seven days) or a shorter time period. For trips lasting more than one week (seven days), at least 1.6 hours per day for every additional day

Financial funding:

  • Funds are allocated on a first come, first served basis
  • Erasmus+ funds are limited. Please apply for funding at least 6 weeks before the start of the mobility. We appreciate an early application for a better planning of Erasmus+ funds.

2022/23: valid for teaching mobilities between 01.11.2023 - 30.04.2024

  • Full funding (daily allowance) for up to six days of teaching at the host institution and
    • 0-2 travel days when travelling by plane, ship, car
    • 0-6 travel days when travelling with sustainable means of transport (green travel): train, bus, carpooling and other sustainable means of transport. Example: If the host institution is located so far away that your travel by bus 2 days each way, you can apply for 4 extra days of financial funding.

The daily allowance is based on the cost of living in the respective destination country (see box "The Erasmus+ country groups).

Daily allowance rates:

  • Group 1: EUR 180 per day
  • Group 2: EUR 160 per day
  • Group 3: EUR 140 per day

The amount of the travel allowance depends on the distance between the point of departure and the final destination. Within Europe the distance is calculated using this calculation tool.

Green Travel:

If sustainable means of transport are used for at least 50% of the trip, an increased travel allowance is paid for the corresonding distance. "Sustainable" means of transport include (as of 11/2021): Train, bus, carpooling, biking, walking. Driving aloine in a car is not included.
