The new electronic student registration procedure of the statutory health insurance companies

The new electronic student registration procedure has been in force throughout Germany since January 1, 2022: Students report to a statutory health insurance company of their choice which university they are studying at. The health insurance company then reports this data electronically to the university.

In certain cases, students can be exempted from the statutory health insurance obligation. This is usually the case, for example, if a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is available. Important: Even in this case, you must contact a statutory German health insurer so that they can digitally transmit the exemption to the university.

Nationwide, the data transfer between health insurance companies and universities takes place electronically only. You cannot be enrolled without the digital notification of your insurance status from a health insurance company.

-> In any case, please contact a statutory German health insurance company - either to take out health insurance or to be exempted!
