If you plan to travel to Germany shorty, kindly inform yourself regularly before entry into Germany, as the requirements are subject to change.

Important: Travellors into Germany are required to report their entry to the local health department and complete the mandatory quarantine. Please note that otherwise fines are possible. The quarantine can be lifted under certain conditions with a negative test result. The negative test result has to be sent to the local health department, which will then inform you if you may end your quarantine (last update: April 13, 2021).

Entry from virus variant areas

For persons staying in so-called virus variant areas ( ) with a particularly high prevalence of mutations of the virus, transport to Germany and entry in accordance with the Corona Entry Ordinance are currently prohibited. This also applies to fully vaccinated persons. Exceptions are only possible in very few cases, for example for persons with residence and right of abode in Germany.

For students and scientists from virus variant areas, this means that a presence study or a research stay in Germany for the winter semester 2021/2022 can’t be guaranteed. Please note that entry is also not possible, even when the German higher education institution has already granted a study place: As entry is not possible, visas cannot be issued as long as a country is considered a virus variant area.

Please inform yourself regularly about the risk classification of your home country.

Will the winter semester 2021/22 take place as planned?

The winter semester starts on October 1, 2021, but the start of the lecture period has been postponed. Lectures will start on October, 11, 2021. Information on the start of lectures is available on the registrar's office's websites or on Paderborn University's Corona-Website of (see FAQ: "Start of the lecture period").

Will lessons in the winter semester 2021 be held online or face-to-face?

The Ministry of Culture and Science in North Rhine-Westphalia announced that an extension of the Corona Protection Ordinance beyond September 30, 2021 is not expected, rather it is firmly assumed that the coming winter semester will take place as usual in attendance. Of course, things can still change at a moments notice; but it cannot be ignored, that in North Rhine-Westphalia and also on the part of the federal government, for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, “the signs” point very clearly to a return to face-to-face teaching.

Against this background, we would like to ask you to prepare now for comprehensive face-to-face teaching in the coming winter semester and, for example, plan your living situation accordingly.

At Paderborn University, to be on the safe side, we will continue our original plans for a hybrid semester (i.e. part of the courses will only take place in person, the other part will only be carried out digitally) in parallel. However, we would like to emphasize that these will only come into effect in an emergency, as a fall-back option, if external requirements make this necessary.

With regard to the specific design of face-to-face teaching in the coming winter semester, there are currently no requirements. You should, however, expect that the so-called three "G" (vaccinated, recovered, tested) play a role and proof of immunization or negative tests must be presented before courses may be attended.

We would like to take this opportunity to draw your attention that a number of unbureaucratic vaccination offers are now available in the district of Paderborn without having an appointment in advance. You can find more information at:
