Chairs of Materials Science and Engineering Mechanics continue research on graded mixed structures

The ILH members - Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Mirko Schaper (Materials Science) and Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Rolf Mahnken (Technical Mechanics) - received a three-year extension of the funding for the project "Experimental and numerical determination of the correlations between the process variables of thermo-mechanical material treatment and the mechanical properties for graded mixed structures with bimodal grain size distribution" from the German Research Foundation (DFG) on 23 June 2022.

In the automotive industry, the approach of load-adapted components is pursued to reduce the vehicle weight in order to enable a reduction of CO2 emissions. These components can be realised by graded thermo-mechanical material processing, which is adapted to possible load or crash situations. The simulation-based process design of such a multi-stage thermo-mechanical treatment allows a reduction of the experimental effort and the targeted adjustment of the properties.
