Digital test formats for written examinations

It must be assumed that aids are used for all digital examinations taken at home. For this reason, digital examinations should always be planned as an open book exam in which any material, such as books and notes may be used. A digital supervision in the sense of monitoring is not planned. Open questions involving complex problems are advisable. An exchange between the students is likely. A possible exchange can be minimised by an appropriate time limit and a random order of questions. A keyboard (text) and a mouse (e.g. multiple choice) should be sufficient for the exam, drawings/scans should only be asked for, if all students were able to practice the corresponding workflow in a test examination. For all digital examination formats, it must be ensured that the students have sufficient time to solve network problems and that they have a contact person who can be reached by telephone.

  1. Take home exam - small assignment (24-, 48- or 72-hour assignment)
    Within a fixed period of time, a written assignment must be finished. The assignment should mainly comprise of open questions with complex problems. These can be, for example, case analyses or evaluations or reviews of scientific publications. This examination form is like a shortened term paper. The students download the tasks and upload their answers at the agreed-upon time.
     
  2. Written examination for download and upload
    Students download an examination paper onto their own computer, treat it like a "classic" written examination with open questions (or a mixture of open / multiple choice questions) and then upload it. The time frame is shorter than for a Take Home Exam and is based on the usual duration of the exam (e.g. 2 hours). Students download the examination paper and upload it with their answers at an agreed-upon time.
     
  3. Written examination with PANDA/ Moodle-tests
    The exam is created by the teachers directly in Moodle via the “Test” function. Students work on the test online and hand it in. Parts of the tests (e.g. multiple choice questions) can be evaluated automatically.
     
  4. Exam formats during the semester
    Examination formats during the semester aim to integrate smaller examinations into the regular process over the semester as part of a portfolio examination. The final examination does not take place. As the semester has advanced far already, this format may be problematic.
     
  5. Oral examinations with video conference tools
    The examination will take place like a regular oral examination with the difference that a video conference software is used for the examination meeting. Paderborn University offers a variety of conference systems. All participants should test their technical equipment before the examination.
