Project Outline
Mobile Media und Dataveillance

My research discusses empowerment and control via mobile media.

Digital wireless media technologies are becoming more and more ubiquitous: mobile phones and RFID are well known materialisations of a technological matrix that includes a rising number of distributed wireless media systems.

These heterogeneous systems seem to have two principal consequences.

Firstly, an increased volume of wireless communication between actors, whether human beings or machines. Secondly, gigantic data spaces which provide exclusive access for companies and authorities, generate huge turnover and utilise discriminating techniques such as social sorting or preemptive surveillance. In my thesis I analyse and discuss qualitative interviews taken with experts such as activists, artivists and hackers from different places like Manila, Bangalore, Madrid, and Tokyo (and more).

This empirical research is accompanied by conceptual frameworks for the different interacting strata. My references are theories of subjectivations from post-colonial and recent feminist thinkers.
