Study Preparation and Support

For language course participants of the Intermediate 2 and Advanced Levels, the International Office offers additional, partly obligatory free-of-charge workshops for study preparation.

Study Preparation

There is probably a lot about German universities that's different from your home university…

The International Office would like to aid you in the beginning of your studies and prepare you for the German system of study and the typical scholarly work techniques.

That's why we offer, to those who take our DSH German course, “Preparatory Workshops” - which are various events to ease your entrance into a successful study in Germany. Taking part in these events is free.

Workshops

Study Strategies (5 x 3 lessons):

In this workshop, we do some training on "scientific work" and deal with questions such as:
  • How do I write term papers, minutes, and theses??
  • How do I give presentations?
  • How can I prepare myself for oral exams?
  • How should I present myself to professors (during lectures, with email contact, during office hour conversations, etc.)?
  • How can I best work in lectures, seminars, and lessons?
  • How di I quote literature?
Seminar Presentation (5 x 3 lessons):
This workshop deals with presentations given by students during a seminar. We will teach you how to prepare and give a presentation. In the course of this workshop, you will hold a presentation of your own, which is also a part of your grade in your oral DSH examination.
Orthography Workshop (1 x 3 lessons):
An instructor of the "Zentrum für Rechtschreibkompetenz" (Center for Orthographic Competency) discusses with the participants of the Intermediate II and Advanced Level the most frequent mistakes in orthography and punctuation.
Individual test preparation / Coaching on demand (5 x 1,5 hours):
For interested participants in the Basic Level and Level Intermediate 1, who feel they need some extra help, we offer - depending on your demand - once or twice a week an afternoon tutoring session in small groups.
Introduction to the Library (1 x 1,5 hours):
We show you how to find your way effectively around the library.Through practical exercises, you learn how to use the databank to search the catalogue and find literature that would be useful to you within your area of study.
PAUL (1 x 1 hour):
In this course the university platform “PAUL” will be explained. PAUL is an online program that all degree students have to use to sign up for seminar classes and exams!
